Dear Parents,
The momentum towards our Gala is continuing to build, as we are a month and a half away. Once again this week, we will be highlighting an alumni story that will be part of the 60th anniversary video.
This week’s Alumni feature is Abby Lobert. She currently works as campus minister at Mohawk College. She also manages the admissions at Act Five initiatives, which runs a Christian gap year program in Hamilton.
Abby was a student at Trinity from about 2002 to 2011. She started at Trinity in grade one at our old building on Walker’s Line, which was very different as it was essentially one hallway. She was part of the group that made the move to our current building, which was really exciting for her.
Abby has a lot of good memories of her time at Trinity. She fondly recalls some of the big experiences, special days, and field trips, like the Safety Village, sledding on the berm, track and field days, Camp Medeba, and skating on the Rideau Canal during the Ottawa trip.
She also felt that the teachers at Trinity cared a lot about her as a student and demonstrated their faith by the way they lived. She saw that through daily devotions and assemblies where they would worship together. She believes “that really, instilled, a vision for seeing God in all parts of my life. And I think now working in ministry, I see the value that Trinity instilled in me from a young age of how everything that we do can bring glory to God.” She goes on to explain that “This set me up well for having daily practices in my life that help to bring me closer to God and to also articulate that and lead others in practicing and following God in their daily lives.”
One particular teacher that was impactful for her was her grade one teacher, Mrs. Paas. She explains that “she would stop the class every time a fire truck went by and we’d stop whatever we were doing and pray for wherever the fire truck was going. Little things like that. I think that kind of set me up really well for life.”
After Trinity, Abby continued in Christian education at Hamilton District Christian High and went on to University of Waterloo for Social Development Studies. She felt that she was grounded in who she was enough to go into a public institution for learning at that time. Towards the end of her undergrad, she learned about Act Five during which she was able to dig into her faith and who she was. This sparked a passion in her to take this on, so others could continue to experience the same thing.
For her, the greatest value that Trinity offered her was community, where everyone was learning together. Both parents and children were involved in “the effort towards quality education and towards Christ. I think that pursuit together, towards something outside of themselves, towards good education and towards following Jesus, really brings people together in a powerful way. That’s what is unique about Trinity Christian School.”
