Firm Foundation

Mar 30, 2023

Dear Parents,

Earlier this week, the Christian School Community in North America was shaken by the events that took place at Covenant Christian School, a small Elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee. A total of 6 people in the school including 3 third grade students, the head of the school, a custodian, and a substitute teacher lost their lives on what they thought was going to be a regular school day. Instead, this would be their final opportunity to shine their lights in the face of darkness.

We live in a world that is broken and this story further illustrates the depths of evil and how the enemy of our souls seeks to destroy lives. When events like this happen, it is hard to make sense of it all. We wonder why God would let something like this happen, especially to young children who had their whole lives ahead of them. We wonder how someone can be filled with so much hate and/or confusion to the point of taking innocent lives.

On this side of heaven, we will not have all of the answers. What we do know is that God allows storms to come. He never promised us that they wouldn’t come. What He did promise though, is that He would be with us even in the most difficult of times. He promised to be our firm foundation (Isaiah 28:16) and, as we spoke about in chapel this morning, our, “Hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (Hebrews 6:19). When we are battered by the winds and raging waves, He brings us His calm (Luke 8:24) and peace.

We also know that our identity is found in Christ and when we are in Him, so is the light. This is the legacy that these 6 individuals have left behind. As the Apostle John writes in chapter 1, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” As we pray for this community over the coming days, let us remember to shine our own lives and be courageous in the face of evil and darkness. May our faith be unshaken in the Word and in the person of Jesus who lives in us.

Blessings,
J-D Lussier, Principal
