Refocusing on God

Jan 6, 2022

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year!

While the hope and excitement of a fresh start seems to be waning already with the return of remote learning and restrictions, it is increasingly clear that we need to look up and find our strength and joy in the Lord alone.

Over these past few days, I have been relating more and more to King David and finding comfort in the book of Psalms. Many Psalms have a theme of lament and frustration at the plight of our fallen world along with a turning point that refocuses our eyes on God. For example, David writes these words to open Psalm 5, “Give ear to my words, O Lord; consider my groaning. Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray.”

David is clearly experiencing a high degree of hardship, which we know to be true from reading about his life in 1st and 2nd Samuel. He is facing some real enemies and wondering how long God will put up with those who are evil and rebel against him. He doesn’t understand why God isn’t eliminating them, or taking away famines, sickness, and war. Yet, David’s trust in the Lord does not waver. He knows what the end result will be and that he must persevere.

As a result, he concludes this Psalm by encouraging all those who follow after God. He says, “But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you. For you bless the righteous, O Lord; you cover him with favor as with a shield.”

My prayer for each student, parent, and staff member today is that you will be reminded that God is our refuge, protection, and shield and that this will spark joy in your life regardless of the challenges you may be facing today. May you be encouraged and strengthened for the year ahead.

Sincerely,
J-D Lussier, Principal
